On this day in 2001 Sol Campbell crossed the North London divide to join Arsenal from Tottenham. It is one of the most controversial transfers of all time.
Campbell, who made 255 appearances in 9 years at White Hart Lane made the move to arch-rivals Arsenal on a Bosman transfer, meaning Tottenham got no money and Arsenal got an England international for free. Campbell had offers from the biggest clubs in the world, both abroad and in England, but opted to sign for the Gunners, this move would rile Spurs fans and he still hasn’t been forgiven. In the months preceding his transfer to the red side of North London he repeated that he would be staying at Spurs, watch here as Campbell is asked about his future in a post-match interview.
Campbell was a huge success at Arsenal, he went on to win the premier league twice with Arsenal, in 2003-04 he was part of the famous invincible’s team that went the whole season unbeaten. Campbell also lifted the FA Cup on 3 occasions and scored a memorable goal against Barcelona in the Champions League final to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead.
