Barcelona are set to announce that superstar Lionel Messi has signed a new contract later today. The Argentinian, whose contract is due to run out next summer will sign a 4-year deal to stay at the Catalan club – the contract will also offer both club and player a one-year extension, potentially keeping Messi at Camp Nou until 2022.
Although the announcement will be made today, it is expected that the contract won’t be officially signed until July 15th when Messi returns to pre-season training to join forces with new manager Ernesto Valverde.
The 5-time Balon d’Or winner has understandably attracted interest from other clubs in the past, but Messi has always chosen to remain at Barcelona – where he has spent all of his adult career since joining from Newell’s Old Boys in 2001. His new contract will contain a release clause of €300 million, which equates to around £264m at todays exchange rate.
The 4-time Champions League winner and 8-times La Liga winner has an impeccable scoring record for Barcelona, netting 349 times in 382 games and breaking records on the way.
